A tour of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), will be offered the afternoon of Wednesday, October 1. Multiple buses will depart San Francisco between 12:30 and 1:00 pm for LLNL. More information on the NIF can be found at https://lasers.llnl.gov/
Buses will take conference attendees to the LLNL badge office and then on to NIF for a self-guided walking tour.
The NIF tour is limited to conference attendees (U.S. citizens and most non-citizens) and spouses of U.S. citizens. Unfortunately, spouses of non-citizens cannot be accommodated. Conference attendees wishing to attend the NIF tour must sign up by the dates below. Due to badging requirements these dates must be strictly enforced.
July 15, 2008: Non-U.S. citizens (foriegn nationals)
August 15, 2008: U.S. citizens
The NIF site has several clothing requirements that have been implemented to protect individuals and personnel around them. Such requirements include long pants that cover the ankle and shirts with sleeves. Short sleeve shirts are acceptable. Sleeveless shirts, tank tops, shorts, capri or cropped pants, skirts or dresses are not acceptable. Sturdy shoes that enclose the entire foot must be worn. Tennis shoes and loafers are acceptable. Footwear with open toes, open backs, moccasins, sandals or high heels are not acceptable.
As provided by LLNL, each site visitor will:
- View a safety video and sign a ledger indicating they have viewed the tape before accessing the National Ignition Facility Project Site.
- Wear hardhats.
- Wear protective eyewear with side shields.
- Wear a hair, beard and shoe covers as required.
PLEASE NOTE: THE DRESS CODE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED
Immediately following the NIF tour, buses will transport participants to the Wente Sparkling Cellars where the conference banquet will be held. Those not attending the NIF tour may take a later bus (~3:00 pm) that will go directly to Wente.
Following the banquet, all buses will return to the Stanford Court Hotel. It is expected that they will arrive at approximately 10:00 pm.
